  • Monitor the baby’s heart rate and mother’s blood pressure
  • Time contractions
  • Identify and assist with complications
  • Help administer medications and epidurals
  • Aid in inducing labor
  • Prepare new mothers for before, during and after pregnancy

Most labor and delivery nurses work in these facilities:

  • Hospital delivery room
  • Physician’s offices
  • Community clinics

By 2020, the U.S. will have a shortage of 800,000 nurses, according to Johnson and Johnson Company.
